New Delhi faces yellow alert for rain and 60 kmph winds as temperatures drop

New Delhi is expected to experience more rainy days accompanied by gusty winds till June 4, 2026, keeping the maximum temperature below the 40-degree Celsius mark. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Monday and Tuesday, forecasting light to very light rain and winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph.
According to a meteorological official, a new western disturbance is expected to influence the region, bringing rain and thunderstorms. On Monday, the maximum temperature is expected to range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, before gradually rising to between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius by Wednesday. The mercury is projected to remain below 40 degrees Celsius until June 6, 2026, due to the persistent wet weather.
This forecast follows a cooler Sunday, where the maximum temperature in New Delhi settled at 35.8 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees below the seasonal average. On Saturday, the temperature was recorded at 37.2 degrees Celsius. Although daytime rain did not occur on Sunday, overcast skies and cool winds kept the heat in check. The minimum temperature on Sunday settled at 23.3 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal, and is expected to rise to 29 degrees Celsius by Wednesday.
The rainfall has also contributed to cleaner air in the capital. New Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the "satisfactory" category for two consecutive days, registering at 98 on Sunday and 85 on Saturday.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) reported on Sunday that the average AQI for the city from January to May 2026 was 211. This marks the second-lowest average for this period in eight years, behind only the pandemic year of 2020, which recorded an average AQI of 181. May 2026 also saw the third-lowest average AQI in eight years, aided by excess rainfall recorded in January, March, and April.
