Husband Arrested After Newlywed Dies In Lodhi Colony Following Alleged Dowry Abuse

A 28-year-old newlywed woman died after falling from the third floor of a building in Lodhi Colony, Delhi, on July 4, following weeks of alleged dowry-related harassment. The Delhi Police arrested her husband on the following Monday under sections relating to dowry death and cruelty, while her sister-in-law has also been booked.
The victim, who worked as a sales executive at a private company in Chhatarpur, married her husband on April 24 after a two-year relationship. She had resumed her job on July 1, hoping that earning an income would help her buy the household items her matrimonial family demanded and eventually end the harassment.
According to the victim's younger brother, the husband's family repeatedly taunted her for not bringing sufficient household items, including furniture and appliances, and made indirect demands of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. The victim concealed the extent of the abuse from her family, hoping to resolve the situation independently without placing a financial burden on them. Her family had previously struggled with debt following her father's death in 2019.
The brother claimed that the victim only disclosed the full extent of the physical abuse, threats, and harassment on July 3, a day before her death. He also alleged that the husband closely monitored her phone, accused her of infidelity, and threatened to have the brother assaulted and dismissed from his job if she continued discussing their marital issues.
On July 4, the victim did not return home from her office. After her family's calls went unanswered, they searched for her and were eventually informed by a police officer that she had been admitted to a hospital after falling from the third floor of an NDMC residential complex in Lodhi Colony.
Delhi Police investigators are currently examining CCTV footage, call records, phone data, and other digital evidence to establish the circumstances leading to the woman's death. The role of other family members remains under investigation.
