Eight Rescued and Two Dogs Killed in New Friends Colony House Fire

Eight people, including four children, were rescued after a fire broke out at a residential building in South Delhi’s New Friends Colony on Sunday afternoon, June 7, 2026. While all human residents were safely evacuated, two pet dogs trapped inside the building died from smoke inhalation.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received an emergency call regarding the fire at approximately 3:39 PM. Five fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the residential building, which is located on Mathura Road.

By the time emergency responders arrived at the scene, thick smoke had already engulfed the building, and the staircase was entirely filled with smoke. The fire had started on the first floor of the structure, leaving residents trapped on the third floor.

Upon their arrival, firefighters heard children shouting for help from the upper floors. Police officers coordinated with the DFS team to execute a high-risk rescue operation. Firefighters deployed ladders to reach the trapped individuals and evacuated them from the building. All eight residents managed to escape the incident unharmed.

According to DFS official Raj Kumar, who supervised the rescue operation, the blaze was caused by an electrical appliance failure. Kumar stated that the fire started on the first floor due to a malfunction in a split air-conditioner’s indoor unit. The unit caught fire and fell onto a bed, which caused the flames to spread rapidly through the area.

While the human occupants were saved, two pet dogs inside the building fell unconscious due to heavy smoke inhalation. Emergency responders administered CPR and first aid to the dogs at the scene. One of the dogs died at the site, while the other was rushed to a nearby veterinary hospital, where it died during treatment.

Fire officials confirmed that the rescue teams and firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within half an hour.
