Dwarka’s South West District Tops Delhi Census With 8.2 Lakh Houses Listed

The South West district of Delhi, which includes Dwarka, Najafgarh, Matiala, and Bijwasan, has topped the household enumeration list for the national capital as the first phase of the Census 2027 ended on Monday.

According to data reported on June 17, 2026, enumerators listed 6.25 lakh households and 8.2 lakh houses in the South West district, marking the highest totals among all 13 districts in the capital.

Across Delhi, a total of 54.98 lakh households and 75.98 lakh houses were listed during the exercise. This represents an increase of more than 20 lakh households since the 2011 census, which recorded 34.35 lakh households.

Officials noted that a direct comparison with the 2011 census cannot be easily drawn because Delhi's administrative boundaries recently changed. The number of districts increased from 11 to 13, with Outer North, Central North, and Old Delhi being carved out as new districts, and Shahdara district being incorporated into the Northeast and East districts.

During the door-to-door first phase, known as the House Listing and Housing Census, enumerators collected detailed information on the condition and construction materials of houses, ownership status, and room counts. They also gathered data on household access to basic amenities like drinking water, electricity, toilets, and cooking fuel, alongside assets such as mobile phones, vehicles, and internet access.

The exercise defined a "household" as a group of people who usually live together and share meals from the same kitchen. A "census house" was defined as a building or part of a building with a separate entrance, recognized as an independent unit.

To conduct the listing, officials divided Delhi into 45,863 House Listing Blocks, with each block containing roughly 180 houses and 600 to 800 people.

While South West Delhi led the count, North East Delhi followed closely with 6.13 lakh households and 8.04 lakh houses. West Delhi, which includes Vikaspuri, Janakpuri, and Rajouri Garden, recorded 5.89 lakh households and 8.02 lakh houses. The New Delhi district recorded the lowest figures, with 63,050 households and 1.02 lakh houses.

The second phase of the census, which will focus on population enumeration to determine the final population count, is scheduled to take place in February 2027.
