Dwarka and South West District Lead Delhi in Census 2027 House Listing
The first phase of the Census 2027 has concluded in the national capital, revealing that the South West district, which includes Dwarka, Najafgarh, Matiala, and Bijwasan, recorded the highest number of houses and households in Delhi. A total of 6.25 lakh households and 8.2 lakh houses were listed in the South West district during the House Listing and Housing Census exercise that ended on Monday.
Across Delhi, census authorities recorded a total of 54.98 lakh households and 75.98 lakh houses. This represents an increase of more than 20 lakh households compared to the 2011 census, which listed 34.35 lakh households.
The South West district topped the household enumeration list across Delhi's 13 districts. It was followed closely by the North East district, which includes areas like Karawal Nagar, Gokal Puri, Shahadara, and Yamuna Vihar, where enumerators listed 6.13 lakh households and 8.04 lakh houses.
According to officials, the census exercise in Delhi was carried out through 45,863 House Listing Blocks. One block consists of around 180 houses comprising 600 to 800 people.
During this first phase, which is happening between April and September across India, enumerators went door-to-door to collect details of houses, their conditions, and the assets owned by each household.
Officials defined a household as a group of people who usually live together and share meals prepared in the same kitchen. A census house is defined as a building, or part of a building, that has its own separate entrance and is recognized as an independent unit.
Direct comparisons with the 2011 census cannot be easily drawn because Delhi's districts recently increased from 11 to 13. New districts like Outer North, Central North, and Old Delhi were carved out, while Shahdara was incorporated into the Northeast and East districts.
The second phase of the census, known as Population Enumeration, is scheduled to take place in February 2027 to count the actual population. The final population count will be known after this second phase is completed next year.
