Wrong-side driving turns Delhi streets into lethal traps

Wrong-side driving has transitioned from a minor traffic nuisance into one of the most lethal threats on the roads of Delhi. Motorists are increasingly choosing to drive against the designated flow of traffic to save time, leading to catastrophic head-on collisions on city streets.

The danger of this trend is intensified by the physics of head-on crashes. When two vehicles collide straight-on, the force of the impact is the sum of their speeds combined. A crash between two cars each travelling at 40 km/h hits with the force of an 80 km/h collision against a stationary wall. Because most urban roads are not designed to handle head-on impacts, these crashes often result in multiple fatalities instead of injuries that could have been survivable.

Furthermore, drivers caught in these situations are left with virtually zero reaction time. On one-way streets, motorists are cognitively trained to expect traffic from only one direction. When a vehicle suddenly appears from the wrong direction, the brain lacks a cognitive script to process the threat immediately, delaying reflexes like braking or swerving.

Traffic researchers have flagged a counterintuitive pattern where wrong-side drivers actually speed up instead of slowing down. The motivation is to clear the illegal stretch of road as quickly as possible to avoid being spotted by traffic police or confronted by oncoming vehicles. This aggressive acceleration significantly increases the likelihood of a fatal impact.

The decision to drive on the wrong side is often driven by minor conveniences, such as saving five minutes, avoiding a long detour to a legal U-turn, or shaving off a few hundred metres around a block or flyover.

Existing road infrastructure also enables this behaviour. Many key intersections, slip roads, and flyover entry points lack clear signage, or have signs that are faded, covered by hoardings, or poorly placed. Physical deterrents are also lacking, as continuous medians and dividers are frequently broken or missing near markets and residential lanes where illegal shortcuts are most tempting.

Current enforcement technology is also lagging. While CCTV networks are extensive, they are primarily set up to monitor speed and red-light violations in the correct direction of traffic, leaving reverse-flow movements largely undetected and unpunished.

To combat this, traffic experts are calling for physical deterrents such as tyre killers or spike strips at vulnerable exit points. They also recommend upgrading to AI-enabled cameras that can detect reverse-flow movement in real time, suspending the licences of repeat offenders, and designing continuous medians with unobstructed signage.
