Worker dies in fall after roof projection collapses at Tilak Nagar building

A 55-year-old construction worker died on Friday afternoon after falling from the fourth floor of an under-construction building in Krishna Puri, Tilak Nagar, West Delhi, when a portion of a roof projection collapsed. The incident occurred at around 3:00 PM while the victim was working at the site.

The deceased labourer has been identified by the Delhi Police as Mohammed Bhola. According to the preliminary investigation, Bhola was carrying out construction work on the fourth floor of the building when a portion of the roof projection he was standing on suddenly gave way.

At the time of the collapse, work for installing a lift was underway at the building. The sudden collapse of the projection caused Bhola to lose his balance and fall to the ground, resulting in fatal injuries.

After the incident, Bhola was immediately rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. However, due to the severe nature of his injuries, he was referred to the Lok Nayak Hospital, where doctors subsequently declared him dead.

An investigator revealed that no safety gear had been provided to the worker at the construction site. Following the incident, and based on a statement provided by Bhola’s co-worker, the Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the owner of the building, who has been identified as a resident of Krishna Puri.

The case against the owner was registered under sections 290 (negligent conduct with respect to building or machinery) and 125A (negligence to endanger human life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In addition to the police action, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ordered the building to be sealed after being informed of the incident. A senior MCD official stated that the civic body coordinates with local police to ensure that no further construction takes place after a stop-work notice is issued. Under sections 344(2) and 475, the police are required to assist MCD officers in halting unauthorised construction and maintaining municipal authority.
