Two arrested in Khyala after woman dies by suicide over alleged dowry harassment

The Delhi Police have arrested a 30-year-old man and his father in the Khyala area of West Delhi in connection with the alleged suicide of his wife, who was reportedly subjected to continuous dowry harassment and domestic cruelty. The arrests were made after the local police received a PCR call on June 24 regarding the incident.

Upon receiving the emergency call, police personnel rushed to the scene in West Delhi and found the 24-year-old woman, identified as Kajal, lying dead inside her rented accommodation in Khyala. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

According to the police, Kajal had been married to her husband, Rohan, for around three years, and the couple did not have any children during their marriage. Considering the circumstances of the death, the matter was referred to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Rajouri Garden, and the statements of the deceased's parents and other family members were recorded.

Following the recording of these statements and initial inquiries into the circumstances of her death, the Delhi Police arrested the victim’s husband, 30-year-old Rohan, and her 56-year-old father-in-law, Rajesh, in connection with the case.

Hareshwar Swami, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), stated that the investigation into the case revealed Kajal was allegedly harassed by her husband and her in-laws over various dowry and monetary demands after their marriage.

In addition to the dowry demands, the deceased woman's family alleged that she faced constant mental and physical cruelty for not conceiving a child even after three years of marriage. The Delhi Police suspect that this sustained harassment and abuse drove the woman to take the extreme step. An investigation into the case is currently ongoing.
