Two Arrested After Firing at Businessman Near Rani Jhansi Flyover
Delhi Police have arrested two men, including a parole jumper, within 12 hours of them allegedly opening fire at a businessman and his friend during an attempted robbery near the Rani Jhansi flyover in north Delhi on Thursday, officials said on Friday.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Javed alias Pauva, 38, a habitual offender with at least 34 prior criminal cases, and Deepanshu alias Deepu, 25, who was previously involved in a robbery case. Police recovered two loaded pistols, a knife, and the scooter allegedly used during the crime.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Niharika Bhatt, the Civil Lines police station received a call around 4pm on Thursday reporting an attempted armed robbery and gunfire near the Rani Jhansi flyover. A police team reached the scene and recorded the statement of the complainant.
The complainant stated that he was riding a scooter toward his hotel with his friend when two men on another scooter intercepted them. As the complainant stopped, one assailant drew a pistol and fired at the duo, while the second attacked with a switch blade.
The complainant managed to push the assailants' scooter aside and ran toward the Tis Hazari courts. The attackers pursued them on foot and fired a second round after nearly 50 metres. Both victims escaped unhurt as the attackers fled the area.
Investigators tracked the suspects using CCTV footage, facial recognition technology, technical surveillance, and field intelligence. Deepanshu was apprehended in the Sadar Bazar area, while Javed fled across the state border to Bhiwadi in Rajasthan.
A police team raided the hideout in Bhiwadi and took Javed into custody. Police stated that Javed had been arrested last year in connection with a gang-rape case registered at Delhi's Nabi Karim police station. He was released on a 23-day parole on July 26 this year but failed to surrender after the term ended, subsequently selling his residence in Wazirabad to live in hiding.
