Two Arrested After 16-Year-Old Girl Gang-Raped on Bus from Greater Noida

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a sleeper bus while travelling from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida towards Sector 63 in Noida on the night of August 4. Delhi Police subsequently arrested the bus driver and conductor after tracing the vehicle through CCTV footage.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North District) Niharika Bhatt, the teenager was travelling from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh to a relative's house in Sector 63, Noida. Due to heavy rain and darkness, she got off near Pari Chowk in Greater Noida, where she boarded the sleeper bus. The assault occurred en route between Pari Chowk and Sector 63.

The victim was later abandoned on Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal in Delhi. She approached the Kashmiri Gate ISBT police station to report the crime. Police registered a case, arranged a medical examination for the girl, and seized the sleeper bus for forensic examination.

Both the driver and the conductor were arrested within hours of the report. The girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee and subsequently handed over to her father as per the committee's directions. An investigation into the case remains underway.

The incident also drew political reactions and official scrutiny. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi criticized the central, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh governments on Tuesday, questioning how the sleeper bus, which had curtains drawn around its berths, travelled along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and Delhi's Ring Road without being stopped at checkpoints.

In addition, the National Human Rights Commission took cognisance of the incident and issued notices to the authorities concerned.
