Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR After 4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Uttarakhand

Strong tremors were felt in South Delhi's Safdarjung Enclave and across other parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday night after an earthquake struck the hill state of Uttarakhand. The medium-intensity quake caused shaking across northern India around 10:20 PM to 10:23 PM, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage anywhere in the capital or its adjoining areas.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake hit Chamoli, Uttarakhand, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale. The NCS recorded the seismic event at 10:23:13 PM IST on October 6, 2026. Seismological data from the agency placed the epicentre at coordinates 30.103° N and 79.561° E, with a focal depth of 13 kilometres beneath the surface.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed the earthquake in Uttarakhand at 10:23 PM IST, measuring the event at a magnitude of 5.1. According to data provided by the USGS, the epicentre was located 34 kilometres north-northwest of Bageshwar at coordinates 30.117° N and 79.615° E, originating at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

Residents across Delhi, the National Capital Region, and neighbouring northern states reported noticeable shaking of buildings and household furniture shortly after 10:20 PM. People in high-rise apartments and residential neighbourhoods experienced the tremors, with many taking to social media to share accounts of the shaking.

In South Delhi, Safdarjung Enclave resident Avani Bansal shared on social media: "Felt my entire couch move, the entire building move - Safdurjung Enclave, Delhi! Never experienced anything close!" While the sudden shaking caused concern across residential pockets of the city, local authorities received no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage to property.

The tremors in northern India followed another seismic event recorded earlier in the day by the National Centre for Seismology. A separate 4.5-magnitude earthquake had struck Assam's Nagaon district during the early hours of Tuesday, occurring at 4:23 AM IST at a depth of 33 kilometres. The epicentre of that tremor was located at coordinates 26.428° N and 93.060° E, with no casualties or major damage reported in that region.
