Three-Year-Old Boy Injured by Kite String in Northeast Delhi's Maujpur

A three-year-old boy was injured after a loose kite string became entangled around his neck while he was riding pillion on a two-wheeler in northeast Delhi's Maujpur area on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place while the child was returning home to Vijay Mohalla with his 17-year-old brother after visiting a nearby store to buy snacks. The sharp thread caught the boy around the neck, leaving him with bleeding injuries.

His 17-year-old brother, who was driving the vehicle, said he only realized what had happened when the toddler began screaming. He stopped the two-wheeler immediately to untangle the thread and rushed the boy home before taking him to a nearby clinic for medical treatment. The older brother noted that he was travelling at a slow speed, which prevented the string from causing a deeper, fatal cut. The child is currently recovering but remains shaken by the incident.

Delhi Police said that a formal First Information Report has not yet been registered as they are awaiting an official complaint from the family. A senior police officer confirmed that authorities received information about the incident from local residents and are taking necessary action, adding that a case will be lodged once the child's statement is recorded.

The boy's family stated that they plan to submit a formal police complaint once the child feels better.

The mishap is the second such incident reported in the national capital within a week. On August 5, a 32-year-old businessman suffered serious injuries when a loose kite string slit his throat while he was riding a motorcycle home from work in west Delhi's Uttam Nagar.

According to Delhi Police records, incidents involving sharp kite strings, commonly referred to as Chinese manjha, have caused two deaths and 12 injuries across the city this year. In May, a five-year-old boy died after his neck was slit by a kite string while riding with his family on a motorcycle in northeast Delhi's Usmanpur.
