Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Delhi on July 2 After Five Day Delay

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Delhi on Thursday, July 2, 2026, bringing widespread rain to several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the arrival, which marks a five-day delay from the normal onset date of June 27.

According to the IMD, this is the first time since 2021 that the monsoon has arrived in Delhi during the month of July. In 2021, the monsoon set in significantly later, on July 13.

Over the last five years, the southwest monsoon has consistently reached Delhi in late June. Weather records show the monsoon arrived in the capital on June 29 in 2025, June 28 in 2024, June 25 in 2023, and June 30 in 2022.

Following the onset on Thursday, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain over many parts of Delhi during the day. Generally cloudy skies are expected to prevail across the city.
