Shovana Narayan Stages Kathak Production on Marine Pollution at Kamani Auditorium

Kathak exponent Shovana Narayan and her dance troupe, Asavari Repertory, performed the production 'Fractured Harmonies: A Call for Renewal' at the Kamani Auditorium in Delhi on the evening of September 10. The classical dance performance addressed pressing environmental issues, focusing on ecological degradation and the disruption of nature.

The presentation commenced with an opening act titled 'Lament of the Azure'. The segment depicted the ocean as a space once teeming with aquatic life before it was progressively damaged by human pollution.

Through movement and rhythm, the dancers illustrated a world overwhelmed by waste, specifically highlighting the choking of waters by garbage, discarded fishing nets, and microplastics. The choreography brought attention to how such pollution has broken the natural balance of marine ecosystems.

The event was attended by United Nations Resident Coordinator Dr. Stefan Priesner and Bindiya Priesner. Dr. Priesner underscored the value of combining art and environmental advocacy to communicate the severity of ecological crises to the public.

Addressing the audience, Dr. Priesner noted that culture plays a vital role in complementing scientific understanding. "Environmental awareness is much more than science," he said. "Culture, and evenings like this, are powerful because they can make people feel its impact emotionally, which can encourage greater awareness and behavioural change."
