Severe Traffic Jams Gridlock Routes Near Noida and Across Delhi
On Wednesday, commuters faced severe traffic jams across key corridors in Delhi and major border routes connecting Noida, including GD Birla Marg leading from the Noida-Kalindi Kunj border and the Delhi Noida Direct flyway towards Noida. The vehicular gridlock persisted throughout the day despite the conclusion of the annual Kanwar Yatra on Tuesday and the absence of rainfall on Wednesday.
Delhi Traffic Police attributed the widespread traffic snarls to a combination of factors, including road crashes, vehicle breakdowns, and roads damaged by rain. In the afternoon, an accident was reported on the Delhi Noida Direct (DND) flyway's carriageway heading towards Noida. Other morning crashes occurred on the Outer Ring Road near the IIT Delhi metro station and on Mathura Road near the Badarpur flyover.
The traffic congestion between Munirka and the IIT flyover on the Outer Ring Road was primarily caused by a fatal road crash near the IIT Delhi metro station, where a man riding a motorcycle was killed in a collision involving a concrete-mixture truck. A traffic police officer stated that passersby gathered near the spot, which was cordoned off for forensic examination, slowing down traffic until normal movement resumed by noon.
Gridlocks affected several critical stretches across the capital and boundary points. Routes leading towards Jasola and Madanpur Khadar from the Noida-Kalindi Kunj border—such as GD Birla Marg, Maa Anandmayi Marg, and Eco Park Road—witnessed heavy traffic congestion. Other severely affected areas included Okhla Estate Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Mehrauli-Gurugram Road, Mathura Road between Ashram Chowk and Badarpur, and the Ring Road stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and South Extension via Ashram Chowk.
The 19-kilometre Outer Ring Road stretch between Rao Tula Ram Marg and Okhla was among the worst-hit corridors. Heavy congestion was reported between Munirka and the IIT flyover, Panchsheel Park and the Chirag Delhi metro station, and between Nehru Place and the Modi Mill flyover. Additionally, both carriageways of the Ring Road between Sarai Kale Khan and Lajpat Nagar remained jammed throughout the day, with commuters reporting bottlenecks near the Sarai Kale Khan loop to Ashram Chowk around noon.
Vehicle breakdowns further hindered traffic flow. Heavy and mini commercial as well as private vehicles broke down on Mathura Road towards Ashram Chowk near the CRRI in Sukhdev Vihar, on the Ring Road near Maharani Bagh, and on CV Raman Marg near Taimoor Nagar. Despite the severe traffic disruptions, accidents, and broken roads, the Delhi Traffic Police issued no advisories on their social media handle on X to inform the public about congested routes or snarl causes.
Commuters voiced frustration over slow-moving traffic and a lack of assistance on the ground. Similar congestion was reported across central and north Delhi areas, including Sardar Patel Marg, Purana Quila-India Gate Circle Road, Ashoka Road, Rafi Marg, KG Marg, Barakhambha Road, Panchkuian Road, Patel Nagar-Shadipur route, ITO, Delhi Gate, Red Fort, and Kashmere Gate.
