Seven Dead in Satya Niketan PG Collapse as DU South Campus Shuts Classes

Seven people were killed after a multi-storey paying guest accommodation collapsed at Satya Niketan near Delhi University's South Campus, prompting the suspension of college classes on Monday, September 7, 2026. Rescue operations at the site entered their second day as emergency teams continued searching through the rubble for survivors.

According to Delhi University officials, at least one of the deceased was an enrolled student. South Campus director Rajni Abbi confirmed that a student from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh, died in the collapse. The university noted that a complete official list of students affected by the disaster was not yet available.

In addition to the confirmed fatalities, authorities reported that three students from Motilal Nehru College remain missing following the structural failure. Rescue teams are actively working at the collapse zone in Satya Niketan to locate the unaccounted-for students.

Delhi University authorities shut down academic activities across South Campus in the wake of the incident. "All classes in colleges have been suspended for Monday. Classrooms have been made into temporary makeshift places for any affected students to come and stay. The doors have been opened; any student can walk in and ask to stay," Abbi stated.

The fatal collapse triggered immediate demonstrations by student groups in the area. The All India Students' Association staged a dharna at Satya Niketan, while members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad gathered to demand strict accountability from civic authorities.

Student organisations have called for an impartial, high-level inquiry into the incident, alongside mandatory safety audits of all private paying guest accommodations operating in student-dominated neighbourhoods. The tragedy has brought renewed scrutiny to building standards and the availability of safe, affordable student housing across the capital.
