Seven Arrested in Rohini for Impersonating CBI Officials in Extortion Bid
Seven persons have been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly impersonating Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials and attempting to conduct fake raids to extort money from a family in Prashant Vihar, Rohini.
The incident came to light after a mother and son refused to open their door when the group arrived at their residence claiming to be investigating officers.
According to the police, the complainant, Pratham Aggarwal, reported that the accused visited his Prashant Vihar home on August 11. The individuals showed purported CBI identity cards and announced they were there to conduct a raid. When Mr. Aggarwal and his mother asked to see a search warrant, the accused allegedly threatened them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal said the group remained outside the house for around one and a half hours, attempting to create fear and apprehension. When neighbours intervened, the accused claimed that a notice had been issued to Mr. Aggarwal's father and left the spot under the pretext of fetching the document from their vehicle. The complainant then alerted the authorities by calling the police helpline at 112.
Investigators found that the accused had sent a forged notice to the complainant's father. Following the preliminary inquiry, an FIR was formally registered in the matter on August 19.
Police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the case. Among those apprehended is the alleged mastermind, 29-year-old Asifa, a former hotel employee; Kuldeep Sharma, a former State Bank of India employee; and Pooja, a former singer at bars and hotels.
According to investigators, Asifa was responsible for recruiting members to the gang, while Kuldeep Sharma provided information regarding the victim's residence and the potential presence of cash or valuables. Pooja allegedly arranged additional members to participate in the operation.
The police are currently probing the gang's suspected involvement in similar extortion attempts across Delhi and Mumbai.
