Rekha Gupta Distributes Delhi Lakshmi Yojana Letters to 4,190 Women
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta distributed sanction letters to 4,190 eligible women under the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana at an event held at Talkatora Stadium on Wednesday. Under the welfare initiative, beneficiaries will receive ₹2,500 per month through direct benefit transfer starting September 1.
According to a release from the Chief Minister’s Office, sanction letters were issued following the completion of the prescribed eligibility and verification process. More than 9 lakh women have registered for the scheme since registrations opened on August 1 for women aged between 21 and 60.
Speaking at the gathering, Ms. Gupta said the large response reflects the trust and confidence women have placed in the initiative. She explained that the scheme has been structured to address both current living expenses and long-term savings, providing ₹1,000 directly into digital wallets for immediate needs while depositing the remainder into fixed or recurring deposit accounts.
The Chief Minister stated that the government will ensure eligible recipients obtain their benefits through a transparent and organised system. She added that the policy seeks to offer financial security, confidence, and greater decision-making independence to women, whom she described as symbols of prosperity and strength in society.
The event at Talkatora Stadium was also attended by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Harsh Malhotra, among other dignitaries.
Providing ₹2,500 in monthly financial assistance to poor women was among the BJP’s key promises ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly election. The scheme was originally titled the ‘Mahila Samriddhi Yojana’ in the party’s election manifesto before being renamed the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana.
Under the current operational guidelines, applicants are required to obtain an endorsement letter from their local Member of Parliament (MP) or Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). On August 24, the Delhi High Court directed the government to file an affidavit within 10 days explaining the requirement for an MP or MLA endorsement to access the financial assistance.
