PWD Invites Feasibility Studies For Two Proposed Delhi Elevated Roads
The Public Works Department (PWD) has officially initiated the next step towards constructing two major elevated road projects in Delhi by inviting consultancy services to conduct comprehensive feasibility studies. The proposed corridors are planned to be built over the Karawal Nagar drain and along Guru Harkishan Marg to improve connectivity in the city.
The upcoming feasibility studies, estimated to cost around Rs 3.2 crore, will determine the technical viability of both projects. According to officials, these studies will lay the essential groundwork for future construction work on the two stretches.
The first proposed elevated corridor is slated for northeast Delhi, where it will run directly over the Karawal Nagar drain. The planned route extends from Ankur Enclave to the Gokalpur metro station. This project is specifically aimed at easing severe vehicular congestion in one of the most densely populated stretches of northeast Delhi.
The road over the Karawal Nagar drain currently connects several local neighbourhoods, including Karawal Nagar, Gokalpur, Sonia Vihar, and Dayalpur. Commuters traveling through these areas frequently witness major traffic snarls. The PWD has identified the primary causes of this congestion as the road's narrow carriageway, the presence of mixed traffic, and dense roadside development.
If the feasibility study approves the plan, the proposed elevated road is expected to provide uninterrupted connectivity towards the Gokalpur metro station. Additionally, it is anticipated to significantly reduce travel times for commuters heading from these localities towards central Delhi. The project would also serve as a vital alternate north-south corridor in the trans-Yamuna region.
The second major project involves an elevated corridor along Guru Harkishan Marg, which is also designated as road number 43. This proposed route will run from Britannia Chowk to the Outer Ring Road, passing via the Shakur Basti railway station to provide smoother transit in northwest Delhi.
