PWD Finds No Electrical Fault in Anand Vihar Electrocution Death

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has stated that a technical inspection found no electrical fault or current leakage from its streetlight pole following the electrocution death of a 28-year-old man in east Delhi's Anand Vihar.
The victim, identified as Sandeep, worked in medical nursing care in Surajmal Vihar. He was returning home after completing his shift on the night of August 26-27 when the incident occurred. Sandeep was found the following morning near a streetlight pole located on the divider of Somnath Marg in Anand Vihar.
According to police, Sandeep's leg had slipped into a pit while his arm and head were resting against the streetlight pole. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A subsequent post-mortem examination confirmed electrocution as the cause of death.
Sandeep, originally from Bihar, was living with his paternal aunt in Bihari Colony in Vishwas Nagar, Shahdara.
Following the incident, the PWD conducted a detailed technical inspection of the location alongside an examination of the electrical infrastructure and maintenance records. The department reported that the pole and its electrical components were equipped with the required protective measures and that no current leakage or fault was established.
Earlier, police had suspected that an electric current might have been passing through the lower portion of the pole. A case has been registered by police, and an investigation into the circumstances of the death is currently underway.
The Delhi government has directed that all aspects of the incident be thoroughly examined to determine whether there was any negligence, lapse, or violation of safety protocols. The PWD affirmed that strict action will be taken against any person or agency found responsible for dereliction of duty.
The department also noted that it is providing full technical cooperation to investigating authorities and will continue strengthening inspections and maintenance of electrical infrastructure across the city.
