Purani Dilli Marks Independence Day With Rooftop Kite Flying and Festivities

Residents across Purani Dilli celebrated Independence Day on August 15 as neighbourhood rooftops near Jama Masjid and the Red Fort filled with crowds for traditional festivities, kite flying, and tricolour displays.

The morning commenced under strict security arrangements in the area surrounding Jama Masjid, where police personnel were stationed on rooftops during the Prime Minister's address at the Red Fort. Following the conclusion of the speech, celebrations commenced across the lanes and terraces of Old Delhi.

Local markets in Purani Dilli had transformed in the days leading up to August 15, with stalls selling tricolour caps, bangles, dupattas, T-shirts, frocks, hairbands, ribbons, and scarves. Fruit vendors placed paper flags on their carts, while local eateries decorated chandeliers with orange, white, and green balloons. Tricolour flags were hoisted across windows, balconies, and rooftops, and several residents painted overhead plastic water tanks in the colours of the national flag.

By the afternoon, Old Delhi residents wearing tricolour kurtas and caps gathered on rooftops. Loudspeakers and deck music systems played patriotic tracks across the area as young men flew kites and danced, exchanging festive shouts across adjoining rooftops.

After sundown at around 7 pm, fireworks and lanterns were launched over the densely packed houses. Rooftop gatherings continued into the night with snacks, music, and displays of fireworks across the Old Delhi skyline.
