Pregnant Defence Ministry Official Dies by Suicide in Dwarka; Husband Booked

A 30-year-old pregnant woman working with the Union Ministry of Defence was found dead at her residence in southwest Delhi's Dwarka on Friday. Police have registered a case of cruelty and abetment to suicide against her husband, a supply chain manager working in Gurgaon, and her in-laws following allegations of dowry harassment.

The victim, identified as Nazia Khanam, served as an assistant section officer (ASO) in the defence ministry. She had married Mohammad Azam Ali Khan on April 11 this year. Following the incident, her husband has gone absconding.

According to the police, the couple had visited a hospital for a medical checkup on Friday. After returning home, an argument broke out between them. Khanam then locked her husband in one room and locked herself in another room, where she hung herself using a chunni.

A PCR call regarding the suicide was received at the Sector 23 police station around 4:21 pm on Friday.

Khanam was three months pregnant and had celebrated her 30th birthday earlier this month. Her family members stated that she had been looking forward to an upcoming promotion at work and was planning to purchase an apartment in December.

Her family has alleged that she faced dowry torture and harassment beginning from the first month of her marriage. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the allegations alongside the charges of cruelty and abetment to suicide as efforts continue to locate the absconding husband.
