Police Shift Sonam Wangchuk To Safdarjung Hospital Under New Chief Anurag Kumar

On Saturday morning, Delhi Police shifted activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi after his health deteriorated during his 21-day indefinite hunger strike. The early morning operation marked the first major operational decision overseen by the newly appointed Delhi Police Commissioner, Anurag Kumar, who assumed charge of the department on Friday.

According to officials, Wangchuk was hospitalised to receive essential medical care. The decision to move the activist was made on the advice of medical experts who had been monitoring his condition during the hunger strike.

The police operation at the Jantar Mantar protest site did not proceed entirely without incident. A brief commotion broke out during the early hours of Saturday when a group of protesters allegedly attempted to obstruct the police action. Despite the resistance from the crowd, police officers reported that personnel exercised restraint, managed the situation, and safely transferred Wangchuk to the government hospital.

The development is highly significant as it represents the first major action under the leadership of Commissioner Kumar. A 1994-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Kumar took over the top post just one day prior to the operation. Police sources noted that the handling of the situation at Jantar Mantar serves as an initial indicator of the new chief's operational style.

Following the operation, a senior police source stated that Commissioner Kumar has made it clear to his officers that maintaining strict law and order across the national capital remains his top priority. The commissioner has reportedly issued direct instructions to all district and unit heads in Delhi, ordering them to ensure that there are no breaches of law and order anywhere in the city.

Wangchuk was safely transferred to the government hospital, where he was admitted to receive treatment following the deterioration of his health during the hunger strike.
