Police File Abetment Case Over Death of 31-Year-Old IIT Delhi Student

Delhi Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against unidentified persons in connection with the death of a 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi campus, officials said.

The student died on August 22 after allegedly jumping from a building on the institute's campus. A PCR call reporting the incident was received at around 8:30 am at the Kishangarh police station, after which a police team was dispatched to the scene.

According to a preliminary inquiry conducted by the police, the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8:00 am. He subsequently went to the Lecture Hall Complex on the campus, where he took an elevator to the sixth floor. He then allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.

Following the incident, he was rushed immediately to the institute's campus hospital, where medical staff declared him brought dead.

A crime team and a forensic science laboratory unit were called to the location to collect evidence from the spot. Police earlier confirmed that no suicide note was recovered during the initial inspection. However, investigators seized a mobile phone found in the deceased student's pocket, which is currently being examined.

As part of the ongoing probe into the incident, the police are in the process of obtaining the student's counselling records and other relevant details from the institute administration.

Officials stated that the case has now been registered under relevant provisions concerning abetment to suicide against unidentified individuals. The circumstances leading to the student's death, along with the potential involvement or role of any other persons, remain under active investigation.

IIT Delhi had previously expressed its grief over the student's death and noted that the Delhi Police were investigating the matter. The institute also stated that it was extending all possible support to the bereaved family.
