NDMC to Resume Central Vista Road Maintenance From CPWD

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will take over the maintenance of roads in the Central Vista area from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), following an order issued on Friday by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The decision returns civic responsibilities for the area to the local municipal body nearly two decades after the central agency was assigned the project.

According to an official memorandum from the ministry, the NDMC will now handle all upkeep, cleaning, and general municipal duties across roads in the Central Vista locality. However, the order specified that Kartavya Path is excluded from this transfer and will continue to be maintained by the CPWD.

The civic body already manages road-related and municipal services across much of Lutyens' Delhi. The recent directive reverses a transition made in 2007, when maintenance of the Central Vista region was transferred from the NDMC to the CPWD following a ministry order issued in December 2006.

Official data shows that the NDMC currently manages approximately 1,280 kilometres of roads and 372 kilometres of footpaths across the Capital. In addition to roads and footpaths, the council's jurisdiction includes 52 major rotaries, 16 subways, three underpasses, and two flyovers.
