Nangloi Woman Dies By Suicide After Leaving Videos Alleging Domestic Abuse

A 26-year-old woman died by suicide at her house in Nangloi, outer Delhi, on Tuesday, after leaving behind video messages accusing her husband and in-laws of harassment and domestic abuse. The Delhi Police announced on Thursday that a case has been registered against the husband.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikram Singh, the police received information about the incident around 11 am on Tuesday. The woman was immediately taken to SGM Hospital, where she was declared dead.

Since the woman had been married for approximately two-and-a-half years, which is under the seven-year threshold, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate was informed to conduct inquest proceedings. A tehsildar recorded a statement from the deceased woman's mother, who alleged that her son-in-law regularly beat her daughter while under the influence of alcohol.

During the inquiry, the woman's family members produced two videos recorded by her prior to her death. Police stated that the videos reflect intense psychological distress and fear for her life due to continuous harassment by her husband. In one of the videos, the woman is seen crying and asking her parents to take care of her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

An autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, and police reported that no foul play has been found in the medical examination so far.

Based on the video recordings and the statement from the woman's mother, the police registered a case against the husband under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which relates to a husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty.

Police added that the husband, who works in the private sector, is currently undergoing medical treatment for a life-threatening head injury that he sustained in an accident a few months ago. The police investigation into the matter is ongoing.
