MPD 2047 Proposes International-Standard Sports Facilities in Dwarka
International-standard sports facilities have been proposed for Dwarka as part of the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) 2047 framework. The draft plan aims to strengthen the capital's sports infrastructure and support the development of global-standard venues across selected emerging growth centres, including Dwarka, Narela, and the Rohini sub-city.
The proposal comes amid India's increasing bids for major international sporting events and an ongoing push to build facilities meeting global standards. According to sources, MPD 2047 seeks to expand Delhi's overall capacity to host both national and international sporting tournaments.
The upcoming plan builds upon Delhi's existing network of major sporting venues. This current infrastructure includes the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shivaji Stadium, 23 Delhi Development Authority (DDA) sports complexes, and three golf courses.
A key structural change introduced in MPD 2047 is the reclassification of sports facilities to provide greater operational flexibility. Sports infrastructure was previously categorised under 'public and semi-public' (PSP) land use, which primarily covers land and buildings designated for governance, healthcare, education, and community services.
Under the new framework, sports facilities have been shifted to the recreational land use category. The recreational classification encompasses leisure, sports, entertainment, and green areas, allowing for more adaptable planning and utilisation of venue spaces.
The gazette notification for MPD 2047 is yet to be issued by the central government, after which the provisions of the master plan will formally take effect across the capital.
