MCD to Convert 78 Community Halls Including Rohini D Block into Arogya Mandirs

MCD to Convert 78 Community Halls Including Rohini D Block into Arogya Mandirs

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) passed a proposal during a house meeting on September 29 to convert 78 under-utilised community halls across the capital, including a facility at Rohini D Block, into Arogya Mandirs.

The under-utilised structures were identified after a survey carried out by the civic body's community service department, which was initiated at the specific request of the MCD’s health department. The move seeks to repurpose civic infrastructure that has experienced low usage for public health and wellness facilities.

According to the proposal tabled during the meeting, booking numbers for several of these spaces were remarkably low in 2024-25. The Rohini community hall recorded only 13 bookings during this period. Other facilities selected under the plan include locations in Lado Sarai, Timarpur, Hakikat Nagar, Meenakshi Garden, Hari Nagar, Janakpuri, and East Patel Nagar.

The survey data highlighted similar trends of limited public utility elsewhere in the city. The Hakikat Nagar facility received only two bookings in 2024-25. Community halls in East Patel Nagar and Rajendra Nagar recorded 12 and 14 bookings respectively during the same timeframe.

The proposal also outlined the current setup and floor usage for several of the selected halls. At Meenakshi Garden, which registered only 11 bookings in 2024-25, the ground floor is presently used for bookings, while the upper floor houses a recreation centre for senior citizens. The MCD plans to utilise the ground floor of this building for the upcoming Arogya Mandir. At Hari Nagar, where 17 bookings were made over the period, a physiotherapy centre is currently functional on the first floor.

Following the municipal assessment, the MCD shared the list of community halls with the Delhi government's health department. Out of the reviewed locations, 72 halls were determined to be suitable for establishing Arogya Mandirs based on accessibility and other relevant factors.
