MCD Clears Encroachments in Sadar Bazaar and Zamrudpur Heritage Sites
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) carried out anti-encroachment drives in Sadar Bazaar and Zamrudpur on Thursday, demolishing roadside illegal structures and clearing protected heritage land.
In Sadar Bazaar, the civic body's maintenance and licensing department launched an operation in Teliwara following a dispute between local shopkeepers and street vendors. Traders in the commercial hub had raised complaints regarding unauthorised vendors taking over road space.
The enforcement followed a protest on Wednesday, where shopkeepers in Pratap Market shut their establishments following an argument with street vendors allegedly operating without permission. The local traders subsequently approached both the Delhi Police and the MCD to demand clearance of the encroachments.
In south Delhi's Zamrudpur village, located near Greater Kailash I, the civic body cleared unauthorised occupations from heritage monument sites in connection with a matter pending before the Supreme Court.
MCD officials and local police deployed more than 60 personnel alongside machinery to carry out the demolition. During the drive, enforcement teams demolished walls built inside the heritage monuments and removed illegal structures that were being used as commercial godowns and for cattle rearing. Three iron gates that obstructed public access to the heritage buildings were also dismantled.
According to the MCD, more than 10 truckloads of construction and demolition waste were cleared and removed from the Zamrudpur site on Thursday. Officials stated that the remaining debris from the dismantled structures will be cleared in the coming days.
