MCD Clears Encroachments and Temporary Structures Around Jama Masjid
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday launched a demolition and encroachment removal drive in and around the historic Jama Masjid in the Old Delhi zone, following directions from the Delhi High Court.
MCD enforcement teams began clearing unauthorised temporary structures from public spaces and neighborhood parks early in the morning. The drive was initiated after the high court instructed the civic body to survey illegal constructions and clear encroachments surrounding the heritage monument.
A senior MCD official stated that encroachments had been identified on public spaces and parks situated on both the northern and southern sides of Jama Masjid. Civic teams moved in to dismantle and remove these structures to free up the encroached areas.
In addition to the immediate surroundings of the monument, at least three parks in the area are being cleared of encroachments during the operation, according to another senior civic official.
The civic body noted that the enforcement action forms part of its ongoing efforts to comply with the Delhi High Court's directives and safeguard public spaces. MCD officials confirmed that the removal of unauthorised temporary structures took place with the cooperation of local stakeholders and other authorities.
The anti-encroachment exercise was carried out peacefully throughout the day. Municipal teams remained on site to clear the debris left behind by the demolition work. Security personnel were also deployed across the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any breach of law and order while the operation was underway.
