Man Shot During Muharram Procession in Old Seemapuri Over Social Media Row

A man was shot and injured during a Muharram procession in east Delhi's Old Seemapuri in the early hours of Friday following an ongoing dispute over an old social media post. Two individuals, including a 22-year-old man and a juvenile, have been apprehended by the police in connection with the attack.

The victim, identified as a local resident named Irfan, had gone to participate in the procession near the Monday market with a friend at approximately 1:30 AM. According to the police, the confrontation took place a short while later at around 2:15 AM.

During the procession, an associate identified as Saleem allegedly signaled his accomplices by whistling. Immediately after the signal, Faizan and another associate intercepted Irfan. One of the attackers then pulled out a countrymade pistol and fired two rounds at Irfan before fleeing the spot.

DCP (Shahdara) Rajendra Prasad Meena confirmed the details of the shooting, stating that Irfan was hit in the back of his shoulder and his abdomen. Irfan was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment for his injuries.

Additionally, an officer noted that the accused individuals also wanted to show off by carrying out the armed attack. Authorities have confirmed that there was no communal angle behind the violence.

Following the incident, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
