Man shot during Muharram procession in Old Seemapuri over social media dispute

A local resident was shot and injured during a Muharram procession near Monday Market in the Old Seemapuri area of East Delhi in the early hours of Friday. The violent incident, which took place around 2:16 am, reportedly stemmed from an ongoing dispute over a social media post.
The victim, identified as Irfan, had gone to participate in the religious procession near Monday Market along with his friend at around 1:30 am on Friday. The event took a violent turn less than an hour later.
According to the Delhi Police, the attack was initiated when a man identified as Saleem allegedly whistled to signal his associates during the procession. Shortly after receiving the signal, 22-year-old Faizan and an unnamed minor accomplice intercepted Irfan on the street.
During the confrontation, one of the associates pulled out a country-made pistol and fired two rounds at Irfan before fleeing the spot. Irfan was struck by the bullets, sustaining gunshot wounds to the back of his shoulder and his abdomen. He was subsequently hospitalized to receive treatment for his injuries.
During their inquiry, police officers discovered that the accused individuals were already known to Irfan. A senior police officer confirmed that the motive behind the shooting was an old enmity linked directly to a social media post. Another officer involved in the investigation added that the accused were also trying to build their image as local criminals in the neighborhood.
Following the incident, the Delhi Police successfully detained two individuals, including the minor accomplice, in connection with the shooting. Based on the formal complaint filed by Irfan, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act at the Seemapuri police station.
