Man Arrested With Automatic Pistol, 15 Cartridges in Vijay Nagar

A 27-year-old man was arrested with a sophisticated automatic pistol and 15 live cartridges on Surjeet Singh Marg in Vijay Nagar, north-west Delhi, on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, during preventive security checks ahead of Independence Day.

The accused, identified as Salman, alias ‘Pahalvan’, is a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. He was intercepted by a patrolling team from the Mukherji Nagar police station while travelling in a car along the stretch in Vijay Nagar.

According to the police, the team was on duty conducting preventive patrolling and vehicle checking operations as part of heightened security arrangements put in place across the capital for the upcoming Independence Day. At around 8 p.m., the police team spotted the vehicle and signalled it to halt. Instead of complying, the driver and his passenger quickly alighted from the car and attempted to run away towards the NDPL office.

The police personnel gave chase immediately and succeeded in apprehending Salman, though his accomplice managed to escape from the spot.

During a search of Salman's person, officers recovered a sophisticated automatic pistol along with 10 live cartridges. A subsequent inspection of the vehicle led to the recovery of five more cartridges from inside the dashboard, taking the total ammunition seized during the operation to 15 rounds. The vehicle, which bore an Uttar Pradesh registration number, was also impounded by the police.

Police revealed that Salman has a prior criminal record, with previous involvements in cases of robbery and snatching.

Following the seizure and apprehension, a case was registered under Section 25 of the Arms Act at the Mukherji Nagar police station. Police teams have launched efforts to trace and arrest the absconding associate, while further investigation is underway to identify the source of the firearm and ammunition and determine the motive behind bringing the weapon to Delhi.
