LG Sandhu Directs MCD to Pilot Indore Waste Management Model in Delhi

Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to pilot the "Indore model" of waste management in one municipal zone in Delhi, aiming to improve waste segregation and reduce the volume of garbage dumped at city landfill sites.

The instruction was issued during a comprehensive review meeting of civic services with MCD officials. Expressing concern over current waste processing efficiency, the L-G noted that roughly half of Delhi's municipal waste is still not segregated at source, and nearly 50% of all garbage generated daily ends up at landfill sites.

Sandhu stated that the waste management system developed by the Indore Municipal Corporation, which has led to the city topping national cleanliness rankings several times, could serve as an effective model for Delhi. He emphasized that fresh waste must undergo scientific processing to prevent new waste from accumulating at municipal sites.

Warning that progress achieved through legacy waste remediation would be undermined if incoming waste was allowed to pile up unchecked, the L-G directed officials to establish a dedicated monitoring mechanism. This mechanism is intended to ensure that daily waste processing continuously keeps pace with daily waste generation.

Beyond waste management, the review meeting addressed a range of civic issues across Delhi. Officials reviewed ongoing de-silting of drains, measures to prevent waterlogging, and preparedness for dengue and malaria during the monsoon season. The meeting also covered the implementation of the PM-UDAY scheme and efforts to alleviate traffic congestion near toll plazas.

To prepare for upcoming seasonal challenges, Sandhu directed the MCD to draft a comprehensive winter action plan aimed at tackling air pollution. As part of this directive, he placed special emphasis on road resurfacing work and ordered a safety audit of MCD roads.
