Left MPs Visit Jantar Mantar, Demand Amit Shah Explain Police Action Against Students

A delegation of Left Members of Parliament visited Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to show solidarity with students protesting against alleged irregularities in the education sector and to demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah explain recent police action against the demonstrators.

The visiting delegation included CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MPs John Brittas, A.A. Rahim, and V. Sivadasan, CPI Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar, and CPI(M) Lok Sabha MPs Amra Ram and Su Venkatesan. The MPs expressed support for the students following clashes during an attempted march to Parliament on Monday, July 20, 2026, and a demonstration on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

During the visit, CPI(M) MP John Brittas accused the Centre of using unprecedented force to suppress a peaceful movement. He alleged that the police crackdown resulted in severe injuries, stating that the delegation met several young protesters whose skulls and legs were broken during the demonstrations.

Due to the ongoing controversy, the Opposition has demanded the resignation of both Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Home Minister Amit Shah. Brittas noted that Parliament had witnessed repeated disruptions over the issue.

CPI leader Sandosh Kumar stated that the Opposition wants Amit Shah to address Parliament regarding the Delhi Police's actions. He noted that the Delhi Police operates under the Union Home Ministry and must be held accountable for the injuries of more than 300 students.

The protest on Monday saw Delhi Police stop thousands of demonstrators from marching to Parliament by using tear gas and baton charges. The ongoing controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in examinations and higher education has led to repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament during the current Monsoon Session.
