Jamia Student Alleges Pressure Over Video Flagging Admission Discrepancies

A Jamia Millia Islamia student has alleged that the university administration pressured him to take down a social media video highlighting discrepancies in the admission process and threatened him with a defamation case for allegedly tarnishing the university's image.

Faizan Ali Khan, an aspirant for the MA Gender Studies programme and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) president at the university, said the entrance examination took place on May 8, with results declared on June 25. In the results, Khan was ranked 27th on the general waiting list and 12th on the Muslim waiting list.

Khan alleged that during the second spot admission round announced on August 19, he was denied a seat while four candidates ranked below him on the general waiting list and three below him on the Muslim waiting list were granted admission.

According to Khan, officials at the Controller of Examinations (CoE) office cited administrative issues when questioned about the matter. He stated he was informed that an impending disciplinary committee review or a show-cause notice against him was the reason his admission was withheld. Khan noted that multiple other students and parents with similar complaints had also gathered at the office.

Following the incident, Khan posted a video on August 20 detailing his allegations on social media. He stated he was subsequently summoned to the proctor's office after the CoE lodged a complaint claiming he had created a ruckus at the office.
