Jahangirpuri Cops Arrest Wanted Criminal Wasim Akram After Gunfight on Expressway
A 29-year-old wanted murder suspect allegedly snatched a service pistol from a police officer and opened fire on a Delhi Police sub-inspector late Tuesday night along the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district. The incident occurred while a special team from Delhi’s Jahangirpuri police station was bringing the accused back to the national capital from West Bengal.
The accused, identified as Wasim Akram alias Lambu, was being brought to Delhi in connection with an ongoing murder case. He had been apprehended earlier by the Jahangirpuri police station special team from Nandigram in West Bengal.
The incident unfolded around midnight in the Naujheel police station area of Mathura district. While traveling on the Yamuna Expressway, Akram asked the officers to stop and let him get down from the transport vehicle on the pretext of urinating.
Upon stepping out of the vehicle near the expressway, Akram allegedly snatched a 9-mm service pistol belonging to Head Constable Harish and attempted to escape into the dark. When the accompanying police personnel immediately began chasing after him, Akram turned and opened fire at the team.
During the gunfire, one of the shots fired by Akram hit Sub-Inspector Ajay Kumar in the arm. The Delhi Police team promptly retaliated by opening fire at the fleeing suspect. A bullet hit Akram in the leg, causing him to fall to the ground, where officers quickly neutralized the threat and re-apprehended him.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mant) Amarnath Yadav confirmed the details of the incident, noting that both the injured sub-inspector and the wounded suspect were initially taken to a nearby community health centre for emergency medical care.
Both Sub-Inspector Ajay Kumar and Wasim Akram were subsequently referred from the community health centre to the district hospital. Both individuals remain admitted at the district hospital, where they are undergoing treatment for their respective gunshot wounds.
