IMD Forecasts Light Rain for Delhi as Pitampura Records 64.5 mm Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy skies with very light to light rain across Delhi on Thursday morning, following widespread showers in several parts of the capital including Pitampura, Pusa, and Mayur Vihar.
According to the weather agency, temperatures across the city are expected to settle between a maximum of 33°C to 35°C and a minimum of 25°C to 27°C on Thursday, August 27. Southeasterly winds blowing at speeds between 5 kmph and 15 kmph are anticipated throughout the day, with precipitation primarily expected during the morning to forenoon hours.
The capital experienced varied rainfall intensity in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am on August 26, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Rainfall figures showed significant local variations across Delhi-NCR. Pitampura recorded the heaviest spell at 64.5 mm, while Pusa logged 51.1 mm. Mayur Vihar registered 12 mm, and the primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 8.8 mm of precipitation. Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4°C and a minimum temperature of 26.5°C during this period.
Meteorologists attribute the current weather activity to multiple active synoptic systems. A low-pressure area originally located over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas has shifted to south Uttar Pradesh and adjoining northeast Madhya Pradesh, accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level.
Additionally, a monsoon trough currently stretches from Jammu through Dehradun, Shahjahanpur, and the low-pressure area over south Uttar Pradesh and northeast Madhya Pradesh towards the Northeast Bay of Bengal. A secondary trough extends from the low-pressure zone across East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. A Western Disturbance is also persisting as a cyclonic circulation over north Haryana and neighbouring regions.
Following the light rain anticipated on Thursday, the weather department expects conditions in Delhi to turn predominantly dry. Partly cloudy skies with no rainfall have been forecast from August 28 through September 1, with no significant variation expected in maximum temperatures over the next seven days.
