IMD Forecasts Light Rain at Red Fort During Independence Day Celebrations

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall at the Red Fort on Saturday during the Independence Day event, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hoist the national flag.

According to a special forecast issued specifically for the Red Fort, the weather agency predicted light to very light showers between 4:00 am and 6:00 am with a 70 percent probability. A second spell of light rain, measuring around 5 mm, is likely to occur between 6:00 am and 9:00 am with a 60 percent probability, coinciding with the morning ceremony.

The weather department added that after the main celebrations conclude, another spell of very light rainfall measuring around 3 mm is expected between the afternoon and evening hours, also carrying a 60 percent probability.

The forecast comes as multiple parts of the national capital recorded showers on Friday. Between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Friday, Pusa recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 30 mm, followed by Chhatarpur with 24.5 mm, Naraina with 10 mm, and Palam with 8.4 mm. Mayur Vihar logged 8 mm, Safdarjung recorded 5.8 mm, Lodhi Road saw 3.2 mm, Janakpuri recorded 3 mm, and the Ridge observatory registered 1.8 mm.

With the recent spells, the Safdarjung weather station has recorded a total of 221.4 mm of rainfall so far this August, approaching the normal monthly quota of 233.1 mm. A meteorological official noted that there are chances of very light-to-light rain continuing across the capital over the next seven days, though no colour-coded warning has been issued.

The IMD routinely issues dedicated weather forecasts for significant national and cultural events, including August 15 celebrations, Republic Day, the Char Dham Yatra, Kolkata’s Durga Puja, and the Jagannath Rath Yatra.
