IIT Delhi External Panel Begins Probe Into MSc Student Death as Protests Continue

IIT Delhi on Saturday announced that an external inquiry committee established to investigate the death of a 31-year-old MSc student has commenced its probe, adding that an external ombudsperson will be appointed next week.

The announcement follows ongoing student protests at the campus since Monday, triggered by the student's death by alleged suicide. The incident marks the eighth such case recorded at the premier institute since 2023.

The development comes a day after IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee warned of disciplinary action against demonstrators for allegedly disrupting the peaceful functioning of the campus.

Addressing the situation, the institute stated that it has approved financial assistance for the deceased student's family through its benevolent fund. A separate relief fund has also been established via voluntary contributions from faculty members, students, staff, and alumni.

Institute officials stated that IIT Delhi remains committed to treating students as active stakeholders and implementing proactive, measurable measures to support their academic welfare and mental health. The administration added that it will continue strengthening existing systems to provide required care and assistance to students throughout their academic tenure.
