IGL Hikes CNG Prices in Delhi-NCR by Rs 3.89 to Rs 86.98 per Kg

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) across Delhi-NCR by Rs 3.89 per kg, bringing the retail rate to Rs 86.98 per kg, the public sector unit announced on Friday night.

The price revision directly impacts public and commercial transport operators, including auto-rickshaws, cabs, and buses, as well as economy-focused private vehicle owners across the National Capital Region.

IGL stated that the price adjustment was necessitated by elevated international liquefied natural gas (LNG) rates. The company described the increase as a calibrated revision aimed at partially offsetting higher input gas costs while maintaining the continuity and reliability of CNG supplies across its distribution network.

According to the utility, global LNG prices have nearly doubled compared to pre-crisis levels. IGL attributed the spike to the re-escalation of the West Asia crisis and its subsequent disruption of cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, an urgency among European nations to build natural gas reserves ahead of the winter season has placed further upward pressure on global benchmarks.

Surging domestic demand has also contributed to higher operational costs. IGL noted that rapid economic growth in India has led to a significant increase in CNG consumption, requiring a substantial portion of input gas to be sourced through imported spot LNG at elevated market prices.

Despite the hike, IGL maintained that CNG retail rates in Delhi remain among the most economical fuel options for consumers. The company stated that private motorists, auto and taxi operators, and public transit systems have largely been insulated from the broader volatility seen in international spot LNG markets, noting that local retail prices had remained relatively stable during recent maritime transit disruptions.
