Home Ministry Notifies 40 Questions for Census of India 2027

NEW DELHI — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified 40 questions that census officials will ask households as part of the Census of India 2027. The formal notification was issued by the Office of the Registrar General, India, under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948.

The notification lays down the precise information to be collected through the Household Schedule in designated areas. The questionnaire covers a broad spectrum of demographic, social, educational, and economic details to create a detailed record of individuals and households.

In terms of demographic data, census enumerators will record each person's name, relationship with the head of the household, sex, date of birth, age, marital status, age at marriage, spouse's name, and nationality.

The social details covered in the schedule include information regarding religion, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, or caste status, parents, and disability. Enumerators will also document each individual's mother tongue as well as any other languages known.

Educational background and technological literacy will also be evaluated through multiple questions. The schedule will capture an individual's general literacy status and digital literacy status, along with their attendance at educational institutions. It will also record the highest educational qualification achieved by a person, including the specific stream or discipline of study.

In addition to social and demographic information, the Census of India 2027 will collect comprehensive information regarding employment and economic activity. This includes tracking whether a person worked during the previous year, their specific occupation, and the industry, trade, or service in which they were engaged.

Furthermore, the schedule will document the individual's class of worker, any non-economic activity they participate in, and whether they are currently seeking or available for work.
