Heavy Rain Lashes Delhi-NCR, Causes Waterlogging and Flight Diversions

Heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR on Monday morning, leaving several key stretches waterlogged and traffic crawling across Noida, Delhi, and adjoining areas. The downpour prompted the India Meteorological Department to issue red and orange alerts for heavy to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Commuters faced significant disruptions as water accumulated on multiple thoroughfares. Inundation and slow-moving traffic were reported across parts of Noida and near the New Ashok Nagar metro station, where travelers had to negotiate flooded road sections. Waterlogging was also reported in Delhi localities including Burari, Chittaranjan Park, and Alaknanda.

According to the weather department, Chhatarpur recorded the highest rainfall in Delhi between 8:30 am and 11:30 am at 28 mm, followed by Lodi Road at 24.6 mm and Pitampura at 18.5 mm. The weather office had warned of rain accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph. Isolated heavy downpours were experienced across southeast, east, Shahdara, central, northeast, south, New Delhi, southwest, west, northwest, and north Delhi.

The intense weather also affected aviation operations in the capital. A total of 15 Delhi-bound flights were diverted due to the adverse conditions, including two international services. Among the diverted services, 11 flights were redirected to Jaipur.

Across the wider National Capital Region, major transit corridors suffered severe bottlenecks. In Gurgaon, traffic slowed to a crawl on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway and National Highway 48, while water accumulated heavily at Vatika Chowk. Heavy rain and localized inundation were also recorded across parts of Faridabad.

In central Delhi, water accumulation was seen around Connaught Place, Parliament Street, and Shivaji Stadium, while visuals from Zakhira underpass showed commuters and vehicles struggling through waist-deep water.
