Gurugram Administration Issues Safety Protocols for School Buses Amid Heavy Rain
The Gurugram district administration has ordered a series of special safety measures to protect schoolchildren amid widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions caused by heavy monsoon rain. The decision was taken during an inter-departmental meeting chaired by District Disaster Management Authority chairman and Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh on Tuesday. The intervention came after school buses faced significant operational difficulties in several parts of the city following heavy downpours on Monday.
Under the directives issued at the meeting, traffic police personnel have been instructed to monitor waterlogged stretches and share real-time information regarding route conditions directly with school authorities. On days experiencing rain or whenever weather warnings are in effect, traffic authorities will issue scheduled status reports at 5:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. In the event of sudden heavy rain or unexpected route blockages, officials are mandated to issue flash updates within 30 minutes to alert transport teams.
School authorities have been told to strictly avoid routes impacted by severe water accumulation. In situations where no safe alternative travel route is available, schools must ensure that students remain safely accommodated on the school premises rather than being sent onto flooded roads. When heavy rainfall occurs during dismissal times, schools are required to disperse students in phased intervals depending on the severity of waterlogging in surrounding areas.
To support school transport systems during inclement weather, dedicated traffic personnel, tow vehicles, and Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles will be deployed at sensitive and vulnerable points along major school bus routes. State transport infrastructure will also be leveraged, with additional Haryana Roadways buses ordered to remain on standby during periods of rain or official weather warnings.
In addition to on-ground measures, education officials have been directed to set up integrated communication channels. This includes creating a WhatsApp broadcast group as well as bulk SMS and email distribution lists that include all school heads and transport in-charges across the district, ensuring immediate and coordinated dissemination of critical transit advisories.
