Gurgaon cab driver arrested for rape and murder of ten year old girl

The Delhi Police on Monday, June 22, 2026, arrested a 29-year-old cab driver for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of a 10-year-old girl from Mehrauli in South Delhi. The suspect, identified as Bashu Kumar, lived in Gurgaon and had been operating vehicles for ride-hailing apps for a decade despite a history of five prior criminal cases, including two attempt-to-murder charges.
According to the police, the victim was sleeping with her family on a footpath near a Metro Station in Mehrauli around 4 a.m. on Monday when Kumar allegedly abducted her. He raped and strangled the child before dumping her body near the Gurgaon-Faridabad border.
Following his arrest, investigators revealed that Kumar had a history of criminal cases registered in Bihar in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. These charges included two cases of attempt to murder, three of thrashing and quarreling, and an alleged assault on a police officer in Bihar’s Khagaria district.
The incident has raised concerns over background verification processes. Kumar’s cab was registered with two online aggregators, but police believe he had not undergone mandatory police verification. Investigators are currently checking records with the ride-hailing firms and have questioned the vehicle's owner regarding the verification process.
On the day of the crime, Kumar reportedly picked up another passenger in South Delhi and dropped them in West Delhi's Vikaspuri before being apprehended by a police team led by Station House Officer Inspector Ritesh Kumar. The arrest was aided by CCTV footage, vehicle registration checks, and GPS tracking.
On Tuesday, Kumar was remanded to two days of police custody. While being escorted to the crime scene, he allegedly attempted to snatch a service revolver from an officer and opened fire. Police returned fire, injuring Kumar in the leg. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital, and a separate case for assaulting a police officer has been registered against him.
