Greater Noida Magistrate Revokes ₹5 Lakh Peace Bond Notice Issued to GBU Student
The Greater Noida Executive Magistrate issued a show-cause notice to a Gautam Buddha University student, Akshat Tripathi, demanding a personal bond of ₹5 lakh to maintain peace following his alleged participation in a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, officials said on September 8, 2026.
The notice was issued on September 4 under Section 130 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), following proceedings initiated under Sections 126 and 135 through the Assistant Commissioner of Police's court. It directed Tripathi to explain why he should not be ordered to maintain peace for six months by furnishing a ₹5 lakh personal bond along with sureties of an equal amount from two local solvent persons. A hearing had been scheduled for September 5.
The administrative action was based on a report submitted by Sub-Inspector Shiva Pandey of the Ecotech-1 police station and forwarded by the station house officer. According to the police report, Tripathi is originally from Jhunsi in Prayagraj and has been residing in the Ecotech-1 area while enrolled as a student at GBU.
Police alleged in the report that Tripathi was encouraging other university students to take part in a protest proposed by a political party and was circulating misleading, anti-government narratives. Officials claimed his actions had created a tense atmosphere across the university campus and posed a risk of altercations and breaches of public order.
However, officials at the Ecotech police station stated on September 8 that the notice had been revoked on September 4 itself after the matter came to their attention, with the concerned authorities informed accordingly.
In a video circulated on social media, Tripathi denied the allegations and maintained that he had taken part in the protest peacefully. He stated that he was not attending university classes at the time because the institution had remained closed for nearly three months.
Tripathi also claimed that he sustained injuries during Delhi Police action when demonstrators marched toward Parliament on July 20. The Students' Federation of India condemned the notice, describing the action as repressive and criticising the Uttar Pradesh government and police.
