Freshers Explore Delhi University North Campus History in Heritage Walk

A heritage walk led by historian Sohail Hashmi guided incoming college freshers through the historic landmarks of Delhi University's North Campus, exploring the stories and architecture that have defined the area over the decades.

The guided tour commenced at the red-brick campus of St Stephen's College, a site that first opened in 1941. For the participating students, the event provided an opportunity to explore beyond lecture halls and classrooms to understand the historical significance of the surrounding neighborhood.

During the walk, Hashmi shared anecdotes and lesser-known details about several prominent historical sites across the campus area. The tour included stops at locations connected to key chapters of the city's past.

Among the landmarks highlighted during the walk was the Flagstaff Tower, which historically served as a European shelter during the capture of Delhi in 1857.

The group also visited the Chauburja Mosque, located inside the Kamla Nehru Ridge. The historic structure, featuring preserved architectural elements such as its side wall, dates back to its construction during the Tughlaq period.

The heritage trail offered students a closer look at the forgotten corners and historic monuments that stand alongside the modern university campus.
