Four Killed After Truck Rams Car on Yamuna Expressway Near Jewar
Four people were killed and three others sustained injuries late Sunday night after a trailer truck broke through the central divider on the Yamuna Expressway near the 36-km point under the Jewar police station limits and collided with a car travelling on the opposite carriageway.
The collision took place around 10:10 pm when the trailer truck, which was heading from Noida towards Agra, breached the divider and entered the oncoming lane. It collided head-on with a Maruti Suzuki Baleno carrying four people travelling from Mathura towards Noida. A motorcycle and a small pickup truck following behind the car were also damaged in the crash.
Police rushed to the site after receiving an alert on the emergency number 112. The four occupants of the car were taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Officials stated that the victims are believed to have died on the spot.
Police identified three of the deceased as Ritesh Pandey, 50, an advocate residing in Delhi, his son Avishar Pandey, 30, and Vikas Gupta, 35, who worked in a corporate role in Noida and lived there. All three were originally from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh and were returning to Delhi-NCR. The fourth deceased was the car driver, identified as Vijay Singh, 35, a resident of Rajasthan.
Three other individuals travelling behind the car suffered injuries. They were identified as motorcycle riders Sumit, 20, and Sachin, 25, both residents of Agra, and pickup truck driver Bhushan Kumar Singh, 22, from Rampur. Sumit and Bhushan were discharged after medical attention, while Sachin remains hospitalised.
An investigating officer said the truck driver was travelling alone and is suspected to have been tired or asleep at the wheel, leading to the crash. The driver was taken into custody on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday after he returned to the scene.
Based on a complaint filed by Sumit, police registered a case at Jewar police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 281 for rash driving, 106(1) for causing death by negligence, 324 for mischief, and 125(b) for acts endangering personal safety. The damaged vehicles were subsequently removed to clear traffic queues on the expressway.
