FIR Registered in Munirka After IIT Delhi PhD Scholar Dies at AIIMS

Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the death of an IIT Delhi PhD scholar who passed away at the AIIMS Trauma Centre on Saturday, October 3. The student died in the hospital more than 45 days after he was discovered unconscious and injured at his rented house in Munirka on August 18, police officials said on Sunday.
The case was formally booked on Sunday under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to abetment of suicide. According to the police, the FIR was lodged following an official complaint submitted by an IIT Delhi security officer in connection with the scholar's death.
According to police officials, the PhD scholar was found unconscious and injured inside his rented accommodation in Munirka on August 18. At the time of the incident, the door of the house was found locked from the inside. Neighbours broke open the door after sensing trouble, following which police personnel arrived at the spot.
The police shifted the injured scholar from his Munirka residence to the AIIMS Trauma Centre in New Delhi. The student was admitted to the hospital and remained under continuous medical treatment for more than 45 days, until he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, October 3.
Police clarified that the incident did not take place inside the IIT Delhi campus premises, confirming that it occurred at the scholar's rented private house off-campus. Investigators said that CCTV footage recovered from outside the house was examined, and it confirmed that the scholar was alone inside the house when the incident occurred.
According to the police, neither the family members of the deceased scholar nor witnesses have raised any suspicions or made allegations against anyone following the incident.
A police officer stated that the FIR has been registered following directions from the Supreme Court, and a further probe into the matter is currently under way. Those in distress can contact the Tele MANAS helpline at 14416 to seek help.
