East Delhi School Teacher Transferred After 10-Year-Old Student Dies of Seizure
A 10-year-old girl studying at a government school in east Delhi's Vinod Nagar died during treatment after suffering a seizure, leading to the transfer of a teacher following allegations of corporal punishment by her family, officials said.
According to the police, the student suffered a seizure during school hours on July 22. School authorities contacted her parents, who took her to the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in east Delhi. She remained under treatment at the hospital for nearly a month before passing away on August 27. Her family subsequently performed her final rites.
On Monday, the girl's family approached the school and alleged that she had fallen ill because a teacher had punished her by making her stand in the sun for not bringing a book. Following the complaint, the school made a PCR call, prompting the police to initiate a preliminary inquiry.
Police officials stated that their initial investigation found no evidence supporting the family's claims. A senior police officer said that verification of medical and school records indicated the cause of death was a seizure, adding that the girl had a documented history of epilepsy. The police questioned other students and school staff, finding no evidence that the student had been subjected to the alleged punishment.
The inquiry also noted that the parents had not lodged any complaints or raised grievances with either the school administration or the police when the incident initially occurred in July. Police stated that no formal case has been registered at this stage because the family has not yet submitted a written complaint.
Following the allegations, Education Minister Ashish Sood announced that the accused teacher had been transferred with immediate effect to ensure a fair and unhindered investigation into the matter.
In an official statement, the Minister said an inquiry into the student's death is currently under way, emphasizing that the government is treating the case with seriousness and sensitivity. He added that strict legal action would follow if the probe reveals any negligence, dereliction of duty, or irregularity at any level.
